Galmpton village is primarily surrounded by either countryside or the River Dart and as a result attracts a wide variation of wildlife.
The river can be easily accessed either at Galmpton Creek, Mill Lane or Greenway Quay (1.3 miles) where its is common to see a mix of estuary and riverside birdlife; Cormorants, Shags, Kingfisher, Heron, Little Egret, Mute Swans as well as seals.
Around the village is a large common and rich agricultural land attracting foxes, badgers, deer and both farmland and garden birds. It is not uncommon to see Bullfinches, Blue & Great Tits, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds, Robins, Wrens, Jays, Woodpeckers, Firecrest, Chaffinch, Owls and many more species.
The area has orchids and several species of butterflies, moths and bats. The recently established Coronation Meadow aims to increase the number and types of flora and fauna in the area.
An informal Whattsapp group of villagers exists who are interested in wildlife and nature in the village and environs. Contact galmptontorbay@gmail.com for details of organiser.
